Greece: The new tyranny

In April Vangelis Koutalis, activist in the Marxist group OKDE, spoke at Socialist Democracy meetings in Belfast and Dublin. Greece is the crucible of the European class struggle and this was a real opportunity to obtain a first-hand account from a participant. Vangelis spoke of the way in which sovereign debt became  state oppression and how oppression became tyranny and the overthrown of democracy by the ECB.  He spoke with  hope of the emergence of new methods of organisation and forms of struggle, of popular committees in working class areas and of the role of young people, initially involved in anarchism who turned towards the working class and challenged the traditional leaderships.

The speaker’s narrative was matched by the audiences, many from an anarchist or republican tradition, who enthusiastically embraced the message of struggle and the hope of building resistance in Ireland.
