Capitalist meltdown

Time for a new workers movement

As Europe descends further into crisis Ireland has fallen into slumber. Elections North and South have seen the return of right wing austerity administrations despite widespread popular anger. The majority of opposition groups have decided to operate inside the limits set by the austerity programmes.

Now the tsunami of Brexit and a more general economic crisis in Europe is sweeping forward. The dreamtime is over and a new movement is necessary.

What we had already was pretty terrible. Recovery saw wages held back, services cut, housing a wasteland and the usual stories of mass privatization, theft and corruption. We were told that we had to accept all this to see economic growth. Now we are to be crushed between Europe and Britain. The magic powder of corporation tax cuts has turned to dust.

Capitalism can survive all this, democratic and workers rights will go by the board and racism and sectarianism will be ramped up.

The fact that many in the opposition see Brexit as a triumph for the working class shows just how weak our position is.

We need to begin the task of building a new workers movement - one that sets itself the task of socialist revolution rather than dancing in the cracks of socialist austerity.
